Reading Room Opens June 29Renovated Space Provides Greater Access to Collections Related to JFK Assassination
DALLAS/June 22, 2010- The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza announced its Reading Room, located on the first floor of the former Texas School Book Depository at 411 Elm Street, will open to the public June 29, 2010 at noon.
Overlooking Dealey Plaza, the new space is a reflective environment providing researchers, educators and students with access to more than 4,000 books, magazines, newspapers and other items from the museum's library collection, covering topics from the life and legacy of President John F. Kennedy to conspiracy theories to 1960s pop culture. The Reading Room represents the latest initiative by the nonprofit museum, which draws more than 325,000 visitors annually.
"The Sixth Floor Museum is pleased to present this incredible resource to North Texas," says Nicola Longford, the museum's executive director. "We anticipate a large influx of research interest and requests of all types from around the world as we approach the 50th anniversary, and we encourage use by local researchers who are interested in exploring the history of Dallas and its connection to President Kennedy."
Available by appointment only from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, the Reading Room offers unprecedented access to the museum's diverse and actively expanding collection, one of the world's largest repositories of original photographs, film and video footage, documents and artifacts related to the assassination of President Kennedy. Staffed by a librarian/archivist, the Reading Room also showcases the museum's efforts to acquire, preserve and strategically digitize and reformat its collections as part of the planning for 2013, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy.
The project, designed by Dallas-based Corgan Associates, includes dedicated spaces for conducting oral history and media interviews and teacher workshops.
