North Texas Teachers Encouraged to Apply for Unique Summer Institute Designed to Provide a New Perspective on Old Resources
TEACHING TEACHERS TO USE PRIMARY RESOURCES IN THE CLASSROOMApplications are being accepted for north Texas social studies, government and history teachers to participate in a week-long "Teaching with Primary Sources" institute this summer. The institute, which will be held July 25 - 29 at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, is designed to help teachers identify and interpret primary sources by drawing upon resources from the Library of Congress, The Sixth Floor Museum and the State of Texas Law-Related Education (LRE). Applications are due May 4, 2011.
The Institute begins with an overview of The Sixth Floor Museum's collection of more than 35,000 items related to the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy, and follows with an introduction on using The Library of Congress' American Memory digital web resources, a collection of over 5 million letters, recordings, photographs, prints, maps and other material that document the American experience. The Library of Congress' overall collection includes over 19 million digitized primary resources.
Using the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, LRE will provide teachers with the tools necessary to understand presidential succession and the criminal trial process. Participants will use all of these resources as they prepare a mock trial that helps them grasp the basics of the criminal trial process and the challenge of making evidence-based arguments. In addition to special opening and closing ceremonies, teachers will take part in a private bus tour of Dallas sites related to the Kennedy assassination, led by the Museum curators. Upon full completion of the institute, teachers will receive up to 27 CPE hours.
The application, due May 4, will be used to assess each teacher's commitment to primary source-based teaching and also asks educators to explain in short essay format how they anticipate sharing what they learn with their students and fellow teachers.
This Institute is made possible through a grant from the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources program. Additional partnership support comes from Law-Related Education and the Texas Education Agency's Region 10 and Region 11 Education Service Centers.
