Joe Carter Oral History
Videotaped oral history interview with Joe Carter. Overnight editor for the southwestern division of United Press International (UPI) in 1963, Carter was aboard a White House Press bus in the Dallas motorcade when he heard shots fired in Dealey Plaza. He covered the aftermath at Parkland Memorial Hospital and Dallas Love Field. Years later, he became a speechwriter for President Lyndon Johnson. Interview conducted at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on Noviembre 18, 2013 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is fifty-one minutes long.

In 2013, Joseph H. Carter, Sr. authored the short memoir, I Heard JFK's Death Shots. The Museum has print and electronic copies of this publication in our Library Collection: Bibliovation | Details for I heard JFK's death shots. I first met Mr. Carter when he and his wife, Michelle, visited Dallas at the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination in 2013. He very kindly agreed to this on-the-spot oral history and presented the Museum with a print copy of his recently-published memoir. We met again almost exactly ten years later in Noviembre 2023 when, as one of the few surviving journalists who covered President Kennedy's trip to Texas in 1963, Carter was asked to participate in multiple news interviews at the 60th anniversary. Joe and Michelle happened to stop by the Museum during the installation of our special exhibit, Two Days in Texas, on the seventh floor. I had the honor of giving them a behind-the-scenes look during that installation, surprising him with an up-close viewing of the original White House Press bus banner, taken from the side of the bus that Joe Carter was aboard during the Dallas motorcade.
