Description and Relevance of Holding:
The Papers of Lyndon B. Johnson form the core of the Library’s holdings and include the While House files from the Johnson administration. The Library also holds the papers of hundreds of other individuals, over 2,000 oral history interviews, and extensive audiovisual collections. More information about the Library can be found at: The Library has posted a few items from its holdings related to the Kennedy assassination on its website at:

Many of the Library’s collections include materials related to the assassination of President John Kennedy. Of particular note is the “Special File Relating to the Assassination of John F. Kennedy,” a file compiled in the Johnson White House in 1967 at the time that William Manchester’s book, The Death of a President, was published. It includes background material for the trip to Dallas, material on Johnson’s activities after the assassination, statements to the Warren Commission, staff recollections, the FBI report on the assassination, and other material.

The Library also holds the Papers of John Connally, the Governor of Texas who rode in the car with President Kennedy and was wounded at the time of the assassination. The Governor’s Papers include materials on President Kennedy’s trip to Texas, correspondence with the Oswald family, correspondence regarding the assassination and the Warren Commission, and research material assembled for articles in Life and Look magazines.

President Johnson had many of his telephone conversations recorded, and the recordings made in November and December 1963, provide particularly rich insights into White House operations during the days following the death of President Kennedy.
