Mourning a President

The funeral of John F. Kennedy.
The day the world stood still.

THE SENATE WING FLAG

A focal point of the exhibit is the flag that flew at half-staff over the Senate Wing of the U.S. Capitol Building during the 30-day national mourning period.

Funeral procession

Planes and trains delayed departures, traffic briefly stopped and news teletype machines were silenced when the funeral began.

THE NATION MOURNED AS ONE

250,000 people waited in a 3-mile-long line to view the president’s casket. 800,000 stood outside to watch the funeral procession.
