Charles Murphy Oral History

Videotaped oral history interview with Charles Murphy. A news anchor on WBAP-TV, Murphy went live on the air shortly after the Kennedy assassination. He appeared nationally on NBC throughout the weekend and helped arranged Governor Connally's first interview while he recuperated at Parkland Memorial Hospital. On Monday, November 25, Murphy recorded a significant interview with Marie Tippit, widow of slain Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit. Interview conducted at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on June 13, 2005 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is fifty-six minutes long.

After his prominent coverage of the Kennedy assassination in Dallas, NBC News soon hired Charles Murphy as an anchor at WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. He then joined ABC News in 1968 and was a correspondent in Miami and Dallas for three decades, covering a number of significant news stories, including the Challenger explosion in 1986, the 1993 Branch Davidian siege in Waco and the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Charles Murphy passed away at the age of 94 on June 20, 2023. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
