Image of Richard and Pat Nixon campaigning in Dallas in 1960

Original 35mm color slide showing a parade held in downtown Dallas for visiting Republican presidential candidate Richard Nixon on September 12, 1960. The photographer stood on Akard Street near the northwest corner of its intersection with Jackson Street. The photo was taken looking straight across Akard Street toward the Baker Hotel. Crowds line both sides of the street and the Hotel balcony above, some with campaign placards. A convertible with a sign that reads "PAT and DICK NIXON" drives south on Akard Street. Richard and Pat Nixon sit up on the back of the car, waving to crowds on the other side of the street.

Curatorial Note:

This photo is one of a series believed to have been taken by Dallas resident Anita Hansen, who attended two parades in two days when presidential candidates Richard Nixon and John Kennedy both made campaign stops in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on September 12th and September 13th, 1960. Hansen photographed both parades. Her photos of the Nixon parade were taken on Kodachrome, which is more stable than Kodak Ektachrome and so has retained its original color. Because this photo was taken in deep shadow, Museum staff have lightened the digital scan of the original slide. - Lindsey Richardson, Curator of Collections
