James L. Hendricks Oral History
Videotaped oral history interview with James L. Hendricks. A fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Hendricks worked on the adaptive reuse of the Texas School Book Depository building after it was purchased by Dallas County in 1977. As a member of The Sixth Floor exhibit team for more than ten years, he designed the original Visitor Center and exterior elevator shaft adjacent to the Depository building. Years earlier, Hendricks consulted with music promoter Aubrey Mayhew when Mayhew briefly owned the Depository building. Interview conducted at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on September 19, 2008 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is two hours and forty-five minutes long.

This memorable oral history with the late Jim Hendricks, which ran more than two and a half hours in a single session, included a video walkthrough of the former Texas School Book Depository as well as the Visitors Center of The Sixth Floor Museum, which Hendricks designed in the early 1980s. Shortly after this recording in September 2008, Mr. Hendricks called me after remembering a few more stories that he wanted to share for the Oral History Project. I visited him at his longtime office in downtown Rockwall, Texas in December 2008 for a forty-five-minute follow-up interview. James Hendricks passed away on September 25, 2016 at the age of 81. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
