John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza Dedicated

Located one block east of Dealey Plaza in Dallas, the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza is dedicated. Discussion about a memorial at or near the site of the assassination began soon after the tragedy, and when consulted, the Kennedy family suggested something simple. Architect Philip Johnson designed a cenotaph, or open tomb, symbolizing the freedom of President Kennedy’s spirit. The memorial was delayed for several years due to fundraising and the construction of an underground parking garage at the site.
