The Museum has commissioned local composer, Jesus J. Martinez, to create a new piece of music that draws from the Museum’s Oral History collection, as well as historic films and photographs from the Museum’s collections and other sources, to creatively reinterpret the story of President Kennedy from the 1960 presidential election through his assassination in 1963.
Echoes from a Memory features local musicians in an ensemble who will perform interactively with oral history interviews, selected historic footage and images, and contemporary voices from across the community projected onto multiple screens. The unique dialogue between the past and present incorporates underrepresented voices and allows the opportunity to reflect the myth of Camelot into the 21st century.
The immersive work is comprised of five chapters, or movements, titled “Echoes.” These Echoes detail five key events during Kennedy’s rise to the presidency, his administration and a fictionalized reflection of the Kennedy family’s dream of the future:
Echo No. 1: A Time for Greatness
A look back at the 1960 Kennedy presidential campaign
Echo No. 2: City Upon a Hill / Standing in the Presence of History
An examination of Kennedy’s speech comparing the challenges of his impending presidency to that of the first Puritan settlers of Massachusetts, harkening back to John Winthrop’s 1630 “The City Upon a Hill” speech
Echo No. 3: A Celebration of the Arts
A look back on the Kennedys’ appreciation and love of the arts
Echo No. 4: Dearest Patrick
A fictional letter from Jackie to her late son Patrick, who died as an infant in August 1963
Echo No. 5: How Shall We be Remembered?
An exploration of an imagined life after the White House for the Kennedy family
